The votes have been cast, and Blizzard’s team-based shooter was far and away the most popular amongst readers. Other titles like Pokemon, Final Fantasy, DOOM and more battled it out for top positions.

Before we get to the list, I’d like to thank anyone and everyone who voted for the 2016 Speakys. We pulled in a record-setting 24,188 votes this year, which is far beyond what I could have hoped for. Special thanks to Riley McLead and Ethan Gach for sharing this over to Kotaku for more reader input, as well as everyone on Talk Amongst Yourselves for helping me with the list and early voting.

Here’s how the voting broke down for the top 20 games

Though there weren’t many write-in votes for one particular game (Setellaris had the most with 14 votes) my favorites included: Your mom, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Hello Kitty Adventure Island, and Monster Girl Quest 3. Glad to see my mom getting a mention again this year. She’ll be thrilled.

It seems like The Speakys get bigger and bigger each year. I’m always amazed at the number of votes we get. It’s insane to think I’ve been doing this for six years. Here’s hoping 2017 is an even bigger and better year for the world of gaming.

FAQ:

Why are the awards called “The Speakys”?

When these awards first began in 2011 I introduced them in the Kotaku forum known as “Speak Up”. The Speak Up forum was merged with TAY in the spring of 2013 and no longer exists. But since the gamers who read Kotaku still have a tendency to “speak up” about their opinions when it comes to games they love I’ve kept the name.

It’s 2017, why are these “The 2016” Speakys?

Because all the games came out and were played in 2016.

What did you use to poll people this year?

I used a basic account on Poll Daddy. They’re the only site I could find that would let me poll thousands of people for free, while still protecting from folks who try to vote multiple times.
